Critical Glass Design Factors for You to Consider

Overhead Glass

  • Reducing heat gain from direct sunlight is critical for summer comfort. Reflective, tinted glass and high performance Low E366 untinted glass are designed for that purpose. Look for a low shading coefficient.
  • Glare from direct sunlight can be very unpleasant. Reducing visible light transmission through overhead glass reduces glare. We recommend reflective glass overhead in all cases when the orientation of the room is such that the sun will be overhead.
  • Ultraviolet light accounts for approximately 50% of fading in furnishings. Look for reduced UV transmission.
  • Thermal efficiency measured by the rate of heat transfer through the glass affects your comfort and cost of heating. Winter U-value is the measure of that heat transfer. Low E glass reduces loss of radiant heat energy. Lower winter U-values mean better thermal efficiency.
  • Safety is a prime concern in overhead glazing. Tempered glass is 5 to 7 times stronger than ordinary (annealed) glass and is used on the outside to provide maximum resistance to breakage from impact.
  • Laminated glass (like the glass in a car windshield) used on the inside minimizes the possibility of falling glass in case breakage does occur. The tempered/laminated combination is very safe and practically eliminates the danger from breakage.

Vertical Glass

  • Reducing heat gain and glare from direct sunlight can be a critical concern depending on orientation of the room. The reflective glass used overhead may not be desirable in vertical glazing but Low E272 and Low E366 glass alone or in combination with a tinted glass provide very good solar control and thermal efficiency without the reflective property. Low shading coefficient is best for south and west exposures.
  • Winter comfort is affected by the thermal efficiency of the glass you choose. Lower winter U-values mean better thermal efficiency.
  • Tinted glass reduces visible light transmission, glare from direct sun and provides a colour that may be aesthetically pleasing. The tinting can also give some sense of privacy to the glass room by reducing visibility from the outside looking in.
  • Glass to the floor must be tempered for safety.
